  1.         The PIA88 program is provided free by Social Security for the
  2. use of people with IBM compatible computers.  Detailed documentation
  3. is available from the Social Security Administration.  The attached READ.ME
  4. file lists the location that I used.  I think your local office could also
  5. supply it.
  6.         First, you probably don't need this program unless you are thinking
  7. about retirement.  It is useful to plan your monthly retirement income.  It
  8. is the same program used by the Social Security Office near you modified
  9. only to the extent that your computer does not have other programs that
  10. they would have and you don't have.  It's mainly a menu problem.
  11.         The program can be run without documentation.  Place the run disk
  12. files in your path and type PIA88 and press enter.  The program will ask
  13. questions and prompt you.
  14.         The program has a number of sample cases built in which you can run
  15. by answering the appropriate questions when they come up.  These sample cases
  16. are a good fit for most people.
  17.         You can enter data specific to you.  To do this you will need a year
  18. by year list of your earnings, something most people don't have.  The
  19. documentation does not tell you how to get this information but it is
  20. available from the Social Security office nearest your home.  Look in the
  21. phone book for the phone number.  A WORD OF ADVISE about calling for
  22. information.  Most people want a summary of earnings.  Such a list provides
  23. year by year detail only for the last few years.  You need year by year detail
  24. since you started to work in order to use this program.  I asked twice for
  25. year by year detail and got summary information each time.  On the third try
  26. I was successful.  BE SPECIFIC.  They assume you don't want what you ask for
  27. because almost nobody asks for it.  The form number, if that will help, is
  28. SSA-7050-F3.
  29.         A second disk is available with source code in basic.  It will not
  30. work with your reqular interpreter basic.  You need MicroSoft Quick Basic.
  31. Someone, probably at Social Security, made some changes and then forgot to
  32. change some GOTO branches so I could not compile the source.  Since there
  33. was no real need to compile my own version, I did not attempt to debug it.
  34. However, the problem looked like nothing more than determining which
  35. subroutine to branch to.  I can't think of any good reason for the source
  36. code anyway, except for those who can't stand using something unless they
  37. understand the program logic.
